Glycolic vs Lactic vs Mandelic: AHA Comparison with Evidence
Alpha-hydroxy acids get sold as one category, but glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid behave differently enough that picking the wrong one is a common reason an acid "doesn't work" — or works too well, too fast, in the wrong direction.
Alpha-hydroxy acids get marketed as a single category — “AHA exfoliant” — as if glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid were interchangeable versions of the same thing. They’re not. Glycolic acid: the deepest, fastest, most irritating
Derived from sugar cane, glycolic acid has the smallest molecule of the three common AHAs at 76 Daltons, which lets it penetrate the stratum corneum more readily than the others. That translates to faster, more noticeable results, better efficacy at lower concentrations — and correspondingly more potential for irritation. That makes it a sensible choice for dry skin, sensitive skin, first-time acid users looking for a gentler introduction, hyperpigmentation where irritation could otherwise set treatment back, and mature skin dealing with texture and dryness together. Some research suggests it’s roughly as effective as glycolic acid for photoageing and pigmentation with meaningfully less irritation, though it tends to need slightly more time or slightly higher concentrations to get there. It also has genuine antibacterial properties and, unusually for an AHA, some oil solubility, giving it a bit of BHA-like ability to get into pores that glycolic and lactic acid simply can’t manage.
That combination makes it a reasonable choice for acne-prone skin, darker skin tones (where the gentler action carries lower risk of triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), rosacea-prone skin that reacts to other acids, and anyone starting acid exfoliation for the first time. If you’ve never used an acid before, have reactive skin, have rosacea, have a darker skin tone where PIH risk matters, or you’re already layering other actives, mandelic or lactic acid is the more sensible entry point.
