Bakuchiol: The Retinol Alternative
Bakuchiol is marketed as a gentler, plant-derived stand-in for retinol. The headline study behind that claim is smaller and more caveated than the marketing suggests — here's what the evidence actually supports.
Bakuchiol turns up on ingredient lists as a “natural retinol alternative”, which is a bold claim for something that isn’t chemically related to retinol at all. So is it a genuine substitute, or a plant extract riding the coat-tails of retinol’s reputation? The honest answer sits somewhere in the middle, and it depends on why you were reaching for retinol in the first place.
What it actually is
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene pulled from the seeds and leaves of Psoralea corylifolia, also known as Babchi — a plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Structurally, it has nothing in common with retinoids. It’s a completely different molecule. What makes it interesting is that it seems to nudge some of the same pathways in skin, without the chemical baggage that comes with retinol.
That distinction matters more than the marketing lets on. Bakuchiol isn’t a drop-in replacement for retinol — it’s a different ingredient that happens to produce some overlapping effects.
The study everyone cites
Most bakuchiol marketing leans on one piece of research: a 2019 British Journal of Dermatology trial comparing 0.5% bakuchiol against 0.5% retinol over 12 weeks. Both groups saw meaningful improvement in the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation, and the results were statistically similar between the two. Bakuchiol users reported less scaling and stinging along the way.
It’s a genuinely useful data point, but worth reading with the caveats attached rather than the headline alone. The trial had 44 participants — not nothing, but small. The retinol comparator was a relatively low 0.5% concentration, not the higher strengths some people use. And the study was funded by a company with a commercial stake in bakuchiol. None of that makes the findings wrong, but it’s the kind of context that gets stripped out by the time a claim reaches a product page. Beyond that one trial, there’s a smaller body of evidence pointing to antioxidant activity, some anti-ageing effects, anti-inflammatory action, and mild antibacterial properties. It’s a reasonable case for the ingredient — just a much thinner one than retinoids can claim after decades of research.
Where the two ingredients actually differ
At a mechanistic level, bakuchiol appears to influence gene expression in ways that echo retinoid activity — upregulating collagen production, encouraging cell turnover — through pathways that overlap with, but aren’t identical to, retinoid receptor activation. It also brings its own antioxidant activity to the table, which retinoids don’t offer, and it has anti-inflammatory properties that may help calm irritated or acne-prone skin, alongside limited evidence for activity against acne-causing bacteria.
Where bakuchiol clearly wins is tolerability. It’s markedly less irritating than retinol, with minimal scaling or sensitivity for most people, and unlike retinol it’s photostable, so it can sit in a daytime routine without the sun-sensitivity caveat. That makes it a genuinely useful option for sensitive skin that reacts to even gentle retinol formulations.
Retinoids win on the evidence itself. Decades of research back their use for wrinkles, pigmentation, and acne, and prescription-strength tretinoin gives a potency ceiling that bakuchiol simply doesn’t have an equivalent for. For acne specifically, retinoids have a solid evidence base; bakuchiol’s is still preliminary. Where the two seem genuinely comparable, based on current (limited) research, is wrinkle appearance, some fading of pigmentation, and general texture improvement.
Who tends to get on with it
Bakuchiol suits people who’ve tried retinol and reacted badly, or who’ve never managed to build up a tolerance despite the usual slow-introduction advice. It’s also a sensible option if you want an active ingredient you can use in the morning rather than confining it to a night-only routine, and some people use it specifically on the nights they’re taking a break from retinoids, rather than as a full swap.
If you can tolerate retinoids without issue, though, there’s less reason to switch. The evidence still favours retinoids for anti-ageing generally and for acne specifically, and if you’re dealing with more significant photodamage, a prescription retinoid is likely to do more than bakuchiol can. Pregnancy is a separate conversation — bakuchiol isn’t a retinoid, so the standard retinoid-in-pregnancy caution doesn’t technically apply, but the safety data on bakuchiol itself in pregnancy is thin. That’s a conversation for your GP or midwife, not a serum label.
Using it in practice
Most formulations sit at 0.5–2% bakuchiol, and higher isn’t automatically better — the concentration that showed results in the research was the lower end of that range. Because it’s photostable, you can use it morning or evening, and there’s no need to build up tolerance the way you would with retinol; daily use from the start is generally fine.
It layers well with other actives. Vitamin C pairs nicely, since both bring antioxidant benefits to the routine, and it’s also compatible with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and AHAs/BHAs — bakuchiol doesn’t carry the same sensitising baggage as retinol, so there’s less to worry about when combining it with exfoliating acids. Some people apply it alongside retinoids directly, or alternate the two; neither approach seems to increase irritation.
As for what to expect: change is gradual, not overnight, and the improvements tend to be subtle — better texture, softer fine lines, more even tone — rather than dramatic. Most people tolerate it well from the start. Give it eight to twelve weeks before judging whether it’s doing anything.
What it won’t do: match retinoid-level results for serious concerns, clear acne on its own, or deliver a dramatic anti-ageing transformation. It’s a supporting ingredient, not a replacement for a proven active when you actually need one.
Does “natural” mean anything here
Bakuchiol is plant-derived — that part’s true, it comes from Psoralea corylifolia seeds and leaves. But “natural” isn’t a proxy for “better” or “safer”: plant compounds can still irritate skin, and by the time bakuchiol reaches a bottle it’s been through the same extraction and formulation chemistry as any other active ingredient. If you have a preference for plant-derived ingredients, bakuchiol fits that brief. Just choose it because it works for your skin, not because the word “natural” is doing the persuading.
When shopping for it, look for the concentration stated on the label (ideally 0.5% or above), sensible packaging, and complementary ingredients like antioxidants and hydrators from a brand you trust. It shows up most often as a standalone serum, blended into facial oils, or folded into a moisturiser.
