Retinoids Ranked: From Retinyl Palmitate to Tretinoin

Not all retinoids are created equal. The term covers a family of vitamin A derivatives with vastly different potencies, evidence bases, and effects on skin.

“Retinoid” gets used as though it means one thing. It doesn’t. The word covers a whole family of vitamin A derivatives, and the gap between the weakest and the strongest of them is enormous — in potency, in the evidence backing each one, and in how much irritation they’ll cause on the way to results. Buy the wrong one and you’ll either give up on retinoids entirely (too irritating) or wonder why nothing’s happening after three months (too weak to do much). Knowing where an ingredient sits in the hierarchy is the difference between those two outcomes.

The Retinoid Conversion Pathway

Here’s the mechanism that explains almost everything else in this article: every retinoid has to convert into retinoic acid before it can do anything to your skin. Nothing else in the family binds to retinoid receptors directly. The pathway runs like this:

Each arrow represents an enzymatic conversion step, and each step loses some potency along the way. The further an ingredient sits from retinoic acid on that chain, the less predictably it converts once it’s on your skin — and the weaker its effects tend to be.

That’s not a knock against the weaker end of the family. It just means retinyl esters and retinol are gentler, need more patience, and suit different situations than tretinoin does.

The Ranking

Tier 1: Prescription Retinoids

Tretinoin (Retinoic Acid)

What it is: The active form of vitamin A itself — no conversion required, since it already binds directly to retinoid receptors.

Strength: The reference point everyone else gets measured against. It has the deepest research base of any retinoid, spanning skin’s appearance in photoageing, acne, and hyperpigmentation.

Evidence: Extensive. Peer-reviewed studies report improvements in the appearance of wrinkles, skin texture and pigmentation, alongside increased collagen production in skin biopsies. For pigmentation specifically, it’s often used alongside tranexamic acid, which works through a different mechanism entirely.

Irritation potential: High, particularly at the start. Dryness, peeling, redness and general crankiness of the skin are common during the adjustment period — often nicknamed “retinisation” — while your skin gets used to it.

Availability: Prescription-only in the UK. You cannot buy this over the counter; it needs a GP or dermatologist. Strengths run from 0.01% to 0.1%.

Best for: People who want the strongest evidence-backed option, can tolerate an irritating adjustment period, and have prescription access.

Tazarotene

What it is: A synthetic retinoid — it doesn’t occur in nature — that converts to tazarotenic acid once absorbed.

Strength: Arguably more potent than tretinoin for some conditions, though “more potent” and “more irritating” tend to travel together with this one.

Evidence: Strong for acne and psoriasis. The cosmetic, anti-ageing research is thinner than tretinoin’s.

Irritation potential: Very high — often worse than tretinoin, which is saying something.

Availability: Prescription-only.

Best for: Acne treatment under dermatological supervision, rather than a general-purpose anti-ageing pick.

Adapalene

What it is: A synthetic retinoid that binds directly to retinoid receptors, similar in mechanism to tretinoin.

Strength: Roughly comparable to tretinoin for acne. Its anti-ageing research is less developed.

Evidence: Strong for acne, with a growing (if smaller) body of evidence for skin ageing.

Irritation potential: Generally lower than tretinoin — one reason it’s often the first prescription retinoid dermatologists reach for.

Availability: Prescription-only in the UK, though sold over the counter in some other countries (the US, for instance).

Best for: Acne-prone skin, or as an alternative for people who can’t tolerate tretinoin.

Tier 2: High-Potency Over-the-Counter

Retinaldehyde (Retinal)

What it is: One conversion step from tretinoin — it converts directly to retinoic acid, skipping the intermediate that retinol has to pass through.

Strength: The strongest retinoid you can buy without a prescription. Some research puts it in the same range as low-concentration tretinoin.

Evidence: Moderate — fewer trials than tretinoin has behind it, but enough to support real effects on photoageing and acne.

Irritation potential: Moderate to high. It can sting, though generally less than tretinoin does.

Availability: Over the counter, but less common on shelves than retinol, and usually pricier.

Best for: People who’ve outgrown retinol and want more, or who are edging toward prescription strength without going there yet.

Tier 3: Standard Over-the-Counter

Retinol

What it is: Two steps removed from tretinoin — it has to become retinaldehyde first, then retinoic acid.

Strength: The retinoid most people mean when they say “retinoid.” It works, but you need a higher concentration than tretinoin to get comparable results.

Evidence: Good. Multiple studies report improvements in photoageing, though the effect sizes are usually smaller than tretinoin’s over the same timeframe.

Irritation potential: Moderate. The extra conversion step buffers the potency, which is exactly why retinol is gentler than tretinoin — and why it still causes trouble for genuinely reactive skin.

Availability: Everywhere, from 0.1% up to 1%-plus.

Best for: Most people starting out with retinoids, or maintaining results after a stronger retinoid has done the initial work.

Tier 4: Entry-Level and Gentle Options

Retinyl Propionate

What it is: An ester form of retinol requiring several conversion steps to reach retinoic acid.

Strength: Weaker than retinol, with correspondingly thin evidence.

Evidence: Minimal — a handful of studies hint at some benefit, nowhere near the volume behind retinol.

Irritation potential: Low.

Availability: Occasionally shows up in products marketed as “gentle” retinoids.

Best for: People whose skin reacts to almost everything and want some retinoid exposure with minimal risk.

Retinyl Palmitate

What it is: The most common retinyl ester, sitting three conversion steps away from tretinoin.

Strength: The weakest retinoid in common use — the conversion to an active form is inefficient enough that very little ever reaches receptor level.

Evidence: Very thin for anti-ageing claims; studies struggle to show meaningful cosmetic benefit.

Irritation potential: Very low, largely because there isn’t much activity to cause irritation in the first place.

Availability: Extremely common in products aimed at beginners or marketed as gentle.

Best for: Honestly, not a lot. It’s retinoid in name more than in function. A low-concentration retinol will usually serve you better.

Special Categories

Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR / Granactive Retinoid)

What it is: A retinoic acid ester that some formulators claim binds directly to retinoid receptors without needing conversion — though the mechanism is genuinely disputed, not just marketing spin.

Strength: Marketed as matching retinol’s effects without the irritation. The independent evidence to back that up isn’t really there yet.

Evidence: Very limited, and much of what exists is in-vitro or brand-funded. Independent, peer-reviewed research is thin on the ground.

Irritation potential: Very low.

Availability: Increasingly common in products positioned as gentle retinoid alternatives.

Best for: Those wanting minimal irritation risk while trying a retinoid-adjacent ingredient — just go in with realistic expectations about what it can prove.

Bakuchiol

What it is: Not a retinoid at all. It’s a plant-derived compound, extracted from Psoralea corylifolia, that may act on some of the same pathways in skin. We’ve covered how bakuchiol actually compares to retinol in more depth elsewhere.

Strength: Limited. One frequently-cited study found it comparable to retinol, but that result hasn’t been widely replicated.

Evidence: Minimal — promising, but nowhere near the research volume behind any genuine retinoid.

Irritation potential: Very low.

Availability: Widely marketed as a “natural alternative” to retinoids.

Best for: People who can’t use retinoids — during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for instance — or who simply want to avoid them while trying something in the same conceptual space. Keep your expectations modest.

Concentration Comparisons

Direct concentration comparisons are messy, because conversion efficiency varies from one person’s skin to the next. As a very rough guide:

  • 0.025% tretinoin sits somewhere around 0.5–1% retinol
  • 0.05% tretinoin is closer to 1%-plus retinol
  • 0.1% tretinoin outperforms any over-the-counter retinol concentration

Treat these as ballpark figures rather than a conversion chart — individual metabolism moves the numbers around more than most people expect. As with most actives, it’s the formulation and evidence behind a given concentration that matters, not just the number printed on the label.

Choosing Your Level

Start with retinol if:

  • You’ve never used a retinoid before
  • Your skin is moderately sensitive
  • You want results without needing a prescription
  • You’re building a routine for the long term

Consider retinaldehyde if:

  • Retinol’s been working but you want more from it
  • Prescriptions aren’t an option for you
  • You’re happy paying a premium for over-the-counter potency
  • Your skin has handled retinol without complaint

Move to tretinoin if:

  • You want the strongest evidence-backed option available
  • You can tolerate the adjustment period
  • You have access to a prescription
  • You’re serious about addressing visible signs of photoageing

Stay with gentle forms if:

  • Your skin is genuinely reactive, not just newly introduced to actives
  • You’ve tried retinol more than once and it hasn’t agreed with you
  • You’re already using other sensitising treatments that would compound the irritation
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding — in which case, most retinoids should be avoided altogether; talk to a GP or midwife rather than experimenting

Using Retinoids Effectively

Whichever retinoid you land on, the same rules apply.

Start slowly. Two or three times a week to begin with, building up as your skin tolerates it — not nightly from day one.

Buffer if you need to. Applying retinoid over a moisturiser blunts the irritation (and the potency, a little) — a reasonable trade-off while your skin adjusts. It also fits naturally into the wider logic of product layering.

Moisturise properly. Retinoids interfere with barrier function while your skin’s adjusting. Give it the support it needs.

Wear sunscreen, without exception. Retinoids increase photosensitivity. This one really isn’t optional.

Be patient. Meaningful visible change typically takes twelve weeks or more. The tretinoin studies showing the strongest results often ran for six to twelve months.

Expect some irritation, but know the limit. Mild dryness and flaking in the first few weeks is ordinary. Severe burning, persistent redness, or irritation that keeps getting worse is not — that’s a sign to dial back, and if it doesn’t settle, worth reintroducing actives more slowly, or checking in with a dermatologist.

The Honest Assessment

Tretinoin has the strongest evidence base of any retinoid for improving the visible signs of ageing. Nothing sold over the counter comes close to matching it — but it’s a prescription medicine in the UK, not something you can pick up at a pharmacy counter, and it needs a doctor’s involvement.

Retinol is a genuinely solid choice for anyone without prescription access, or whose skin won’t tolerate tretinoin. It works; it just takes longer and needs a higher concentration to get there.

Retinaldehyde sits in the middle — stronger than retinol, gentler than tretinoin — with a smaller evidence base than either of its neighbours.

Retinyl esters, palmitate especially, deliver marginal benefit at best. Products often carry the word “retinoid” on the label without much retinoid activity behind it.

Newer entrants like HPR are interesting rather than proven. They might work as well as claimed; they might not. The evidence isn’t there yet to say with confidence either way. Outside the retinoid family entirely, copper peptides and growth factors work through different mechanisms again — generally weaker evidence for visible anti-ageing than tretinoin, but reasonable complements for skin that can’t tolerate more retinoid exposure.

The best retinoid for your skin is the strongest one you can actually stick with — a gentle retinoid used every night will outperform a potent one used once a month, purely because consistency beats potency when irritation gets in the way.
